4-H Big Red Summer Academic Camp - Discover Animation
Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts | 1300 Q St - Lincoln, NE 68508
Big Red Summer Academic Camps are residential career exploration camps held at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. By participating in a camp, youth get the opportunity to explore the Nebraska campus, meet people from across the country, spend time investigating an interest or potential career, and have a lot of fun! During the week-long camps, participants will work with our university faculty to explore the topic of their particular camp. After spending several fun-filled days on campus, participants' families are invited to attend a special capstone event where youth showcase their achievements.
Big Red Summer Academic Camps are open to all youth grades 9th/10th-12th, including recent high school graduates. All housing and food are provided for participants throughout the camp. Space is limited, and camps will fill on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each camp offered has a specific number of openings. A waitlist option will be available. Please see Big Red Summer Academic Camp Sessions for a list of camps offered this year, descriptions, participant limits, costs, and scholarship opportunities.
Big Red Camps are hosted by Nebraska 4-H and University faculty members in various academic areas across campus.

A truly playful way to learn animation from LA-based animators!
In this fun, hands-on class, we will learn about animation history, principles, and concepts then create our own animations! In our ‘playground’ students get to try hand drawn, stop motion, and historical processes using optical toys, paper, clay, and more!
*This class is geared toward a younger audience but parents/caregivers/grandparents/etc are welcome to also take the class with their youngster(s)!

Enjoy an afternoon making animation!
In this creative class, we will begin by reviewing concepts and methods of animation. Our goal is to think about movement at a frame-by-frame level, and try out different technical processes. Students can then explore a variety of animation techniques in an open studio format including stop motion, optical toys, digital 2d, hand drawn animation as well as project development. Students in this class can work in groups or solo depending on each idea and its needs.
Have a project you want to develop? Bring it! Want a project to learn or flesh out your skills? We got you. This is a great way to build a portfolio piece or try out a technique you’ve always wanted and alongside others who share your interests in animation and media arts!
During our open studio time, we will screen fun animation to inspire you and offer fresh ideas of how you can express yourself through animation. Plus, our director and her assistant(s) are on hand to give demos along the way and assist and support you.
Returning and new students welcome! New students will get basic training on our equipment before turning it loose.

In this Music Video Camp, we will explore the history, format, and production of music videos. We will screen and discuss what makes a successful music video and the artistic concepts going into it.
Students will learn how to plan, shoot, edit, use a green screen, and create special effects before making their own full-length video. They will work in groups and as individuals guided by an LA-based professional filmmaker and educator.

Here’s a super fun way to learn how to draw some of your favorite characters WITH the artists who work on the show! Each week we will watch a clip from a different Nick show then learn how to draw characters from the show with artists at Nick! We will even have a "throwback" week to learn how to draw old school Nick characters! All are welcome!

DRAWING FOR ANIMATION + GUEST ARTISTS
AGES: 6th-12th grades

A super awesome way to learn about the different “gigs” in the animation industry, learn how to develop your drawing skills, and learn from the pros at Nick! In these workshops we will focus on a variety of different ways artists draw for animation at Nickelodeon and in the Animation industry! We will discuss and draw with folks in different departments such as Character Design, Prop Design, Backgrounds, Storyboarding and Visual Development. We are also working on a special “mystery workshop” with a superstar at Nickelodeon! No drawing experience necessary and all are welcome!
We are working on setting up satellite sites for these free workshops across the state of Nebraska. Fill out an interest form and we'll let you know when registration is open!

Creative Writing for Adults

Participants will be part of a very exciting creative writing journey exploring the work of powerful writers. Engaging in resonant writing exercises, participants learn tools that elicit highest creative capacity and have a lot of fun along the way.

This writing workshop series is for teenagers to cultivate their creative voice. Each workshop includes freewriting, exploring powerful work by great artists, focused writing exercises, sharing each other's writing, then closing as a group.
Participants gain a deeper connection to themselves, the community and the world. They experience the healing power of writing to tell their story as well as learn tools of the craft. They enjoy developing their work in a peer-to-peer setting that offers a safe, loving and encouraging environment in which to create.

How would you photograph your world to show others now and in the future about your life today?
Documentary photography has been vital to learning about our history as a people by allowing us to see how life has changed and evolved, or it might show connections we may still have in common. In this fun and reflective class, students will apply a fresh lens to the world around them!
Students will look at work from great photographers throughout time documenting daily life in interesting and honest ways. Students will discuss and learn about photography concepts and techniques to capture more than just a pretty image. They will learn to create a mood, feeling, or expression of their creativity.
This class is designed for students to use cameras/tech that is available to them. This is a cross-country class, so students will connect and see the lives of others within or outside of their home state. No photography experience is necessary, but an interest in studying the world around you is required!

Acting for Audition Self-Tapes Workshop

The vast majority of initial theatre and film auditions are now being held virtually. Self-tapes are now the industry standard and knowing how to audition properly is one of the most important tools an actor can have.
In this 4-hour workshop intensive, students will learn the fundamentals of a self-tape audition as well as tips and tricks on how to make their submission stand out to casting directors, agents, and managers. Students will upload a self-tape, will then be given feedback, and then have the opportunity to implement the adjustments.

Creative College Prep Course

This is a special course designed to give Nebraskans interested in pursuing a career in the creative arts one on one guidance as well as access to a supportive community of like-minded folx. In this extended offering, students will work directly with our founding director, Erica Larsen-Dockray to get individualized support in applying for arts programs. Erica has developed an organizational and support system with past students who were then accepted into programs at CalArts, the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, Otis College, Pasadena College of the Arts, UCLA, and more.
This course will support students in their college application processes including:
> Guidance on program searches and possibilities
> Developing a body of work to build a portfolio or other visual application requirements that best represent each individual’s voice and creative expression.
> Support in written application requirements such as artist statements, essays, etc.
> Bring in guests and recruiters from their various schools or similar for further support
> Organizing application requirements, timelines, materials, and work samples
We are currently exploring partnerships and funding sources to run this class. Please fill out an interest form and we'll contact you as soon as it's open for registration.
